The story follows Sox Moraka (played by Tony Kgoroge), a young, middle-class black actor living in a comfortable Johannesburg suburb with his white girlfriend. Desperate to land a role as a hardboiled gangster in a popular television series, Sox is told by directors that he lacks "street cred" and authenticity.
To prove himself, Sox returns to the Soweto township of his youth to research the lifestyle. He reunites with a childhood friend, Zama (Rapulana Seiphemo), who is now a real-life car hijacker and gang leader. As Sox embeds himself with Zama’s crew—including the expert getaway driver Fly and the disillusioned activist Joe—he becomes increasingly seduced by the adrenaline-fueled world of crime. The film reaches a climax where Sox must decide if he is still just "acting" or if he has truly become the character he sought to play.
