Dwg Format [updated] (2024)
The origins of the DWG format predate Autodesk . It was first created by programmer for a CAD package called Interact in the late 1970s. Autodesk later acquired Interact and used it as the foundation for AutoCAD , which debuted in 1982.
Since its inception, the format has undergone frequent updates—roughly every two to three years—to support new software features, such as 3D modeling and advanced object intelligence. Despite its proprietary nature, several organizations, most notably the , have worked to reverse-engineer the format to promote interoperability among different CAD platforms.
