Before the rubber eraser, people used abrasive stones like pumice or, more commonly, soft breadcrumbs to rub out graphite and charcoal marks. The turning point arrived in 1770 when English chemist Joseph Priestley discovered that a piece of vegetable gum rubber was excellent for removing pencil marks.
