Sometimes, a download fails because the server tries to transcode the file into a compatible format for your device, but the process times out or crashes the server.

The most frequent cause is simply that the download feature hasn't been enabled for the specific user account. By default, Jellyfin may restrict this to prevent unauthorized data usage or server strain. Go to your Jellyfin Dashboard > Users .

On mobile devices, the download feature is often still considered "experimental".

Try disabling transcoding for that specific user. This forces a "Direct Download" of the original file, which is often faster and more reliable. 4. Incorrect File Permissions

If you can download as an admin but others cannot, this is almost certainly the issue. 2. Experimental iOS & Android Features

If using Findroid or other third-party clients, ensure the option to "Download over mobile data" is enabled in the app's internal download settings. 3. Server-Side Transcoding Glitches

In the official iOS app , you may need to press and hold the "Jellyfin Mobile (iOS)" version number at the bottom of the settings menu to reveal hidden experimental settings and toggle downloads.

Jellyfin needs explicit "read" access to your media folders. If the Jellyfin service (the "jellyfin" user on Linux/Docker) doesn't have the right permissions, it may be able to see the files but fail when trying to package them for a download.
