Set during World War II, the story begins with childhood friends Rafe and Danny joining the Army Air Corps. Rafe joins the Eagle Squadron in England while Danny and Evelyn are stationed at Pearl Harbor. When Rafe is presumed dead, Evelyn and Danny find comfort in each other. Rafe’s unexpected return coincides with the infamous morning of the Japanese air raid, forcing the characters to set aside personal conflict to survive the battle and later participate in the retaliatory Doolittle Raid.
