Windows 7 Starter was exclusively a 32-bit operating system; no 64-bit version existed.

The edition was tailored for the "netbook" wave of the late 2000s, often featuring Intel Atom processors. Its minimum requirements included: 1 GHz 32-bit (x86).

Many users found the restrictions of Starter too limiting and sought ways to move to more robust editions:

It supported a maximum of 2 GB of RAM , regardless of how much was physically installed in the device.

While Microsoft originally planned to limit users to running only three concurrent applications, this restriction was removed before the final release. Minimum Hardware Requirements

It lacked Windows Media Center and native DVD playback capabilities.

The signature transparent "Aero Glass" user interface was absent. Instead, users were limited to the opaque "Windows Basic" theme.

The system did not support extending the desktop across multiple screens.
