Historically used for plain text files. It automatically converts line endings between different operating systems (e.g., changing Windows' CRLF to Linux's LF ). While helpful for some scripts, this "smart" conversion can break non-text files.
You should always use binary mode for the following file types to avoid corruption: .jpg, .png, .mp4, .mp3, .pdf Archives: .zip, .tar, .gz, .rar Executables: .exe, .bin, .msi, .app winscp download binary mode
If you want every download to use binary mode, follow these steps: Open . Go to Options > Preferences . On the left-hand sidebar, select Transfer . Find the Default preset in the list and click Edit . Historically used for plain text files
